Stick & Ring Free Ice Times
Stick and Ring is a free ice-time opportunity for RRA members to work on individual ringette skills in an unstructured, supportive environment. Similar to hockey’s stick-and-puck sessions, players can use the ice to focus on the areas of their game they want to improve, including skating, shooting, passing, stickhandling, ring control, footwork, and agility.
The goal is to provide members with additional opportunities to develop their skills outside of regular team practices. Players can work independently, with a parent, or with an approved RRA coach, while sharing the ice safely with other members.
Scheduling
The goal is to offer one Stick and Ring session per week, subject to ice availability.
Ice Supervision and Safety
Each session will have a designated supervisor responsible for overseeing activity on the ice, maintaining safe use of the designated shooting and skating areas, and helping coordinate the session as needed. Another supervisor will also oversee the dressing rooms.
To ensure a safe and organized environment:
-
Full ringette protective equipment must be worn by all RRA players participating on the ice.
-
Parents who are permitted on the ice must wear a helmet and skates.
-
Designated shooting areas will be established at each end of the ice, near the ringette lines and nets.
-
The areas between the ringette lines will be used primarily for skating and other individual skills.
-
All participants must remain aware of others and follow the designated ice-use guidelines.
Allowing parents to participate on the ice would provide additional opportunities for one-on-one skill development, particularly for younger players who benefit from direct support and encouragement.
Can I, as a parent, go on the ice to help my child?
The program would allow parents to go on the ice to work directly with their child. Parents would need to wear a helmet and skates and follow all session guidelines. As a parent who is not a RRA coach must sign a waiver:
https://docs.google.com/
This wavier must be sent to technicaldirector@
Can I bring my other children that are not RRA players?
No this is ice time for RRA players to work on their skating and shooting skills and it is free to the players and a parent.
What equipment do we need?
RRA players must wear full ringette protective equipment to participate on the ice.
Is there a cost to attend?
No. Stick and Ring is intended to be a free benefit for RRA members.
As a coach, can I run a practice during Stick and Ring?
No. Stick and Ring is intended for individual skill development rather than team practices.
Coaches may work with individual players, but teams should not attend as a group or take over a section of the ice. The goal is to ensure all RRA members have an opportunity to use the ice and work on their own skills.
Can a coach work with my child one-on-one?
Yes. Coaches may provide individual instruction and help players develop specific skills, provided they are not conducting a team practice or monopolizing a section of the ice.
What if the shooting area is busy?
Players should wait for a safe opportunity and share the shooting area with others. Safety, patience, and awareness of other participants must always come first.
What should I work on?
Players can focus on any individual skills they would like to improve, including:
-
Skating and edge work
-
Shooting and accuracy
-
Passing and receiving
-
Stickhandling and ring control
-
Footwork and agility
-
Other individual ringette skills
Players are encouraged to set their own goals, make productive use of the ice, and respect the space and needs of others.
Can I shoot anywhere on the ice?
No. To keep the ice organized and safe, designated shooting and skating areas will be established.
-
Shooting: The areas at each end of the ice, near the ringette lines and nets, will be designated for shooting.
-
Skating and individual skills: The areas between the ringette lines will be used primarily for skating, stickhandling, passing, and other individual skills.
All participants must follow the designated areas and remain aware of other players.
