Children’s Ringette
The Children’s Ringette program provides an age and stage appropriate physical activity experience for young ringette players under the age of 10.
Children’s Ringette is focused on creating opportunities that emphasize:
- age and stage appropriate activities
- fun and play
- grouping children based on skill and readiness
- maximum participation and engagement
- opportunities to practice learned skills
- adapted game play (small area games and mini-nets)
SEASON STRUCTURE
- The Children’s Ringette season runs from October to March.
- Registration fees cover approximately 20 ice times.
- Each ice time will be a minimum of 45 minutes and a maximum of 60 minutes in length.
EQUIPMENT
Full ringette equipment is required. Jerseys and goalie equipment will be provided.
DIVISIONS
Regina Ringette offers a Learn to Play Program as well as three divisions in Children’s Ringette:
- Learn to Play
- FUNdamentals 1 (FUN1)
- FUNdamentals 2 (FUN2)
- FUNdamentals 3 (FUN3)
Learn to Play (LTP):
- The Learn to Play (LTP) division provides children with an introduction to the sport of ringette, offering an opportunity to learn with players of similar abilities.
- The ice-times are focused on the development of skills such as skating and stopping, as well as ringette-specific skills like ring control and shooting.
- Each ice-time will start with a group activity and then break into smaller, manageable stations to play and work through skills during fun activities.
- Ice times will be once per week, dates and times to be determined.
- The LTP division includes children ages 4-9 with little or no skating experience.
FUNdamentals Divisions:
In the FUNdamentals divisions, new players will participate in on-ice skills evaluations at the start of the season to help place them into the appropriate division and draft them onto teams. Previous registrants will have a graded report card for placement.
Some of the factors being considered to evaluate the participants include:
- falling and getting up
- skating forward and backward
- stopping
- ring control – shooting and passing
FUN 1
FUN1 is for children who are new to ringette or new to skating. Introduce basic skating, ring handling, passing, and shooting skills in a fun and engaging environment.
FUN1 teams may participate in 1 or 2 nearby tournaments throughout the Ringette season.
The FUN1 division may have ice-times any weekday evening or on the weekend.
RRA books all practice ice for FUN1.
Teams in FUN1 will collect a nominal player fee to cover such things as: the league equipment deposit, team clothing, tournament registration, team pictures and team bonding activities.
Each 55-minute ice-time will be divided into:
- 30-45 minutes of practice time concentrating on the development of skating and basic ring skills, an introduction to some of the rules of ringette, as well as fun games and team activities.
- Remaining minutes of ice time will be a game against another FUN1 team.
Ice Surface Transition:
- First half of the season: shorten the ice surface, utilizing one blue line.
- Second half of the season: Transition to 3/4 ice, utilizing both blue lines
Key Development Areas:
- Basic skating techniques (forward stride, stopping, turning).
- Introduction to passing and receiving.
- Improving ring control.
- Fun-focused mini-games and drills to promote engagement.
Game Structure:
- 4v4
- Goalie stick provided and players will rotate, in net, being goalie with each 2-minute shift.
- 2-minute shifts (facilitated by the Coaches)
- No officials
- No Scoreboards or Standings
- No Game sheets
FUN 2
Further develop fundamental skills and introduce structured gameplay with a focus on teamwork and strategy.
Each 55–60-minute ice-time will be divided into:
- 20-30 minutes practice time concentrating on the development of skating skills, ring skills, passing, shooting, checking, basic goalie instruction, and an introduction to the rules and game concepts of ringette.
- 20-30 minutes of game time against another FUN2 team.
Ice Surface Transition:
- First half of the season: 3/4 ice, ice times consisting of partial practice and partial game as noted above. Utilizing one blue line and the creases from the beginning.
- Second half of the season: Transition to full-ice games with all ringette rules that are followed in FUN3 except 3-in the zone; moving both nets up, painting two creases, utilize two blue lines, creases, penalties, free passes, two-line pass.
Note: 2 ice times during the first half of the season & 2 ice times during the second half of the season will be dedicated to full practice to work on learning rules and positions. These practices may use shared ice.
Key Development Areas:
- Improved skating techniques (backward skating, quick turns, edge control).
- More advanced passing and shooting techniques.
- Positional awareness and basic gameplay strategy.
- Introduction of goalies and net play.
Game Structure:
- 4v4 first half of season
- 5v5 full ice format for second half
- Ringette rules introduced in the second half. Coaches will receive an email from the commissioner confirming this.
- Introduction to penalties and sportsmanship.
- A ref will be provided for all games
- Coaches on the ice, in game coaching and teaching
- 2-minute shifts (facilitated by a Timekeeper using the buzzer)
- No Scoreboards or Standings
- No Game sheets
The home team on the schedule will provide a Timekeeper, and the visiting teams coaches will be responsible to draw one goal crease.
FUN2 teams will be allocated additional practice ice (2-3 per month) that they will pay for out of fees collected by the team. Registration fees cover game-day ice and referees. RRA books all practice ice for FUN2.
FUN2 teams may participate in 1 or 2 nearby tournaments throughout the Ringette season.
The FUN2 division may have ice-times any weekday evening or on the weekend.
Teams in FUN2 will collect a nominal player fee to cover such things as: the league equipment deposit, extra team practice ice, tournament registration, team clothing, team pictures and team bonding activities.
FUN 3
Prepares players for competitive ringette by refining skills, game awareness, and understanding of full rules.
FUN3 will play full-ice, one hour ringette games with Ringette Canada Rules.
Ice Surface:
- Full-ice games for the entire season.
- Utilize small nets for the entire season during games.
Note: Teams can use big nets during the second half of the season in practices if they wish.
- Practices will consist of full ice (30%) and shared ice (70%). RRA books all practice ice for FUN3.
Key Development Areas:
- High-level skating techniques (crossovers, acceleration, agility).
- Advanced passing, shooting, and checking techniques.
- In-depth understanding of game strategies and team play.
- Full introduction to competitive gameplay elements.
Game Structure:
- Full enforcement of all rules including 3 in the zone, utilizing two blue lines, creases, free passes, two-line pass and penalties.
- Emphasis on team play, positioning, and game strategy.
- Coaches on the bench, players making on-ice decisions.
- Games will be 2×17-minute stop time periods
- Games are officiated by two referees
- Goal Cap of 3 goals per player, per game
- Regular Game Sheet (provided by the home team)
- Scoreboards and Standings
- 1 Timekeeper (visitor) and 1 Scorekeeper (home) each game
FUN3 teams will be allocated practices weekly that they will pay for out of fees collected by the team. Registration fees cover game-day ice and referees. RRA books practice ice for FUN3. Coaches may book extra ice if they choose to do so.
FUN3 teams may participate in 2 or 3 nearby tournaments throughout the Ringette season.
The FUN3 division may have ice-times any weekday evening or on the weekend.
Teams in FUN3 will collect a nominal player fee to cover such things as: the league equipment deposit, extra team practice ice, tournament registration, travel, team clothing, team pictures and team bonding activities.
The FUNdamentals Program, from evaluations right through LTP, FUN1, FUN2 and FUN3, ensures that players develop skills progressively while maintaining a fun and supportive environment. The structured ice surface transitions and gradual introduction of rules provide an optimal learning experience, preparing players for higher levels of ringette.
